About Our Guruji

Pandit Bhisham "Jito" Misir

Pandit Bhisham “Jito” Misir, known with deep affection and reverence as Guruji Misir, is a distinguished Hindu priest, teacher, and spiritual guide whose life has been devoted to the preservation, teaching, and lived practice of Sanātana Dharma—Eternal Righteousness. His journey from a spiritually enriched childhood in South America to becoming a respected Guru in the United States is a testament to devotion, discipline, and destiny.

Guruji Misir was born into the Brahmin caste in the United States in the summer of 1970, but was soon taken to Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara, Guyana, where he spent his formative years. Raised primarily by his āji and āja, his maternal grandparents, he grew up in a household filled with devotion, prayer, and traditional Hindu values. The influence of his paternal grandfather, Bhagat Maraj Misir, a well-known Pandit and Guruji of Enmore, East Coast Guyana, deeply shaped his spiritual temperament. Surrounded by elders who lived with discipline and reverence, young Bhisham learned early the meaning of dharma, humility, and a god-centered life.

At the age of seven, he returned to the United States to live with his parents, Choondai and Gorak Misir, lovingly known as Sona and Hanso. The Hindu community in New Jersey during this period had not yet developed the rich network of mandirs seen today. In the late 1970s and very early 1980s, organized Hindu temples were virtually nonexistent in the region. It was only as the East Indian migration from Guyana and Trinidad grew that mandirs began to emerge under the leadership of pioneering pandits who sought to preserve culture and dharma in a new land.

Guruji Misir’s mother and father were deeply committed to ensuring their son stayed connected to his spiritual roots. With no nearby mandir in their area, his parents would travel for more than an hour on Sundays—using public transportation from New Jersey to New York—to bring their young son to the nearest temple for satsang, prayer, and community worship. These weekly pilgrimages, made with love and determination, left a lasting imprint on him, teaching him the value of devotion, sacrifice, and perseverance.

In 1984, tragedy struck with the passing of Guruji’s father. The death of his beloved father profoundly shook him and awakened in him a deep, burning desire to understand the nature of life, death, and the eternal journey of the soul. This loss became a turning point in his life. While still very young, he began immersing himself in Hindu scriptures, searching for answers on the mystery of existence and the immortality of the ātman. His study of the Bhagavad Gita, Upanishads, and Purāṇic teachings during this period ignited a spiritual fire that would shape the course of his destiny.

Within a few years, guided by this inner calling, he became a devoted chela of Guruji Maheswar Tiwari, a respected Hindu priest and scholar originally from Guyana and lived in New Jersey, USA. Under Guruji Tiwari’s disciplined and loving mentorship, Bhisham Misir refined his understanding of Sanskrit mantras, Vedic rituals, and philosophical inquiry. Guruji Tiwari nurtured his spiritual growth, helping him to mature not only in knowledge but also in character, devotion, and responsibility.

As his studies deepened, Guruji Misir expanded his mastery of sacred literature, including the Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahābhārata, and a wide range of Purāṇas such as the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, Shiva Purāṇa, Devi Purāṇa, Ganesh Purāṇa, and Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa. His devotion and studentship culminated in his formal recognition as a Pandit at the young age of nineteen. In 1998, his spiritual maturity was further acknowledged when he was bestowed the title of Guruji, affirming his role as a teacher capable of guiding disciples along the timeless path of dharma. Over the years, he became the Guruji to numerous chelas from the Guyana and Trinidad, who honor him as a compassionate mentor and spiritual father.

Alongside his ritual expertise, one of Guruji Misir’s deepest commitments has been to teaching children and youth. He believes wholeheartedly that the continuity of culture rests in the hearts of the young. Through storytelling, philosophy, bhajans, chanting, and instruction in traditional instruments such as the dholak and harmonium, he has inspired generations to embrace their heritage with pride and devotion. His gentle manner, patience, and encouragement have shaped countless young minds and hearts.

Throughout his life, Guruji Misir has officiated ceremonies, read various Yagnas, counseled families, offered spiritual guidance, and shared profound insights into the nature of dharma, karma, and the soul. His presence brings calm, clarity, and reassurance. His teachings emphasize that spirituality is not just prayer but a way of living—with compassion, integrity, humility, and love.

Today, Pandit Bhisham “Jito” Misir—Guruji Misir—stands as a guardian of Hindu tradition, a respected scholar of sacred texts, and a spiritual anchor for communities seeking guidance in an ever-changing world. His life, marked by devotion, discipline, and service, continues to illuminate the path for all who walk toward the light of Sanātana Dharma.
